Eight players on the Detroit Tigers will take part in the World Baseball Classic. The rosters were announced on Thursday evening. The tournament itself kicks off on March 7th and will go through the 21st. There are 20 teams taking part, compared to 16 when the Classic was last held in 2017. Here is the breakdown of where the Classic will be and the teams in the four pools:

  • Pool A-Taichung, Taiwan: Chinese Taipei, Netherlands, Cuba, Italy, and Panama (March 8-12)
  • Pool B-Tokyo, Japan: Japan, Korea, Australia, China and Czech Republic. (March 9-13)
  • Pool C-Phoenix, Arizona: USA, Mexico, Colombia, Canada, Great Britain. (March 11-15)
  • Pool D-Miami, Florida: Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Israel, Nicaragua. (March 11-15)

Here are the Tigers who are taking part in the WBC:

  • LHP Jack O’Loughlin (Australia)
  • INF Andy Ibáñez (Cuba)
  • RHP Chavez Fernander (Great Britain)
  • INF John Valente (Italy)
  • 2B Jonathan Schoop (Netherlands)
  • SS Javier Báez (Puerto Rico)
  • DH Miguel Cabrera (Venezuela)
  • LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (Venezuela)

Other notable Detroit Tigers

O”Loughlin, who pitched with West Michigan last season, joins two former Tigers in pitcher Warwick Saupold and outfielder Ulrich Bojarski. Former Tigers outfielder Jacob Robson will play for Team Canada. Next up, Andy Ibáñez, who is competing for a 3rd base job, is playing on Team Cuba. The Cuban roster features a few players Tigers fans should be familiar in two White Sox, Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert Jr.  Chavez Fernander, who was born in the Bahamas, is a reliever who has bounced around the Tigers minor league system, will play for Great Britain. Valente, who hit .291 for the Mud Hens last season, will be on Team Italy. The last time the Tigers had a player on Team Italy was RHP Jason Grilli, who took part in three Classics (2006,2009 and 2013)

Jonathan Schoop, who was playing with his brother in the Caribbean Series for Curacao, will play on the Netherlands roster. Former Tigers RHP Jair Jurrjens will be his fellow teammate.
