The MMA world is wondering what is next for Justin Gaethje after losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254. Gaethje was no match for The Eagle’s pressure and was put to sleep in the second round on Saturday night. Khabib announced his retirement from MMA at UFC 254 and vacated the Lightweight belt. Now that the belt is up for grabs, who should fight for the shot at becoming the champ at 155?

Should Gaethje Get Another Shot At The Lightweight Belt?

Now that Khabib is out of the fight game, the UFC needs to determine who is the champ of the most exciting division. I think many fans were shocked that Khabib decided to hang up the gloves on Saturday night, but regardless the Lightweight division needs to move forward to keep the division going. Gaethje needs another shot at the belt. Yes, I’m a Gaethje stan, but the man was on not only a four fight win streak, but a four fight KO streak before losing to Khabib on Saturday. Poirier vs McGregor should not be for the vacant 155 title. McGregor needs to be stay active and can’t just fight once a year to get a title shot. Defeating Cowboy is no easy task, but it doesn’t warrant a title shot in my opinion. However, the winner of Poirier vs McGregor should fight Gaetjhe for the belt.

Gaethje proved just how durable Khabib truly is. The Eagle survived the devastating striking of Gaethje and waited for the right opportunity to take the fight to the ground. Between McGregor, Poirier, Ferguson, and Chandler the division has never looked better. I’d love to see McGregor vs Poirier and Ferguson vs Chandler on the same card. It would give a clearer picture for not only what is next for Gaethje, but will determine who is the next title contender.

McGregor gets what he wants, so the fight between McGregor and Poirier will most likely be for the belt. I just would hate to see Gaethje have to sit and wait till Spring to get another shot, but we need to see who is going to win between McGregor and Poirier. In my opinion, this sport is about staying active with or without fans. Gaethje fights at least twice a year and puts on a show every time. The UFC tends to headline card with title fights, but they need to make an exception on January 23rd. The UFC needs to set Justin up with the winner of McGregor vs Poirier and make that fight for the 155 belt.
