Sometimes there can “addition by subtraction,” and nothing personifies than today’s news about Rocket Watts.

Reports surfaced Monday afternoon that the Sophomore guard entered the NCAA transfer portal. Watts, who is a Detroit native, is the second Spartan player since MSU’s season ended.

And to be honest, this decision is best for both parties. However, this wasn’t always the case.

At one point, Watts was a former four-star recruit, leading a 2019 class of players. Since then, unfortunately, his star has dimmed quite a bit. Last season with the Spartans, he averaged 7.7 points on 33.6% shooting and 2.7 assists.

As mentioned above, Watts is the second Spartan player to transfer since the season ended, following in Jack Hoiberg’s footsteps.

The writing was on the wall for Watts’ departure.

On Saturday, the Spartans received a transfer commitment from Northeastern point guard Tyson Walker. While playing for the Huskies, he averaged 18.8 points and 4.9 assists last season. Additionally, he was the 2020-2021 CAA Defensive Player of the Year. He fielded offers from Maryland, Miami, Kansas, Texas, and Vanderbilt. Regarded as being a phenomenal two-way player, Walker can be an instant upgrade for the Spartans on day one.

As Walker comes in, Watts exits, leaving little memories for Spartan fans outside of a handful of 20-point games. His most notable performance was in the season finale against Michigan. And it was while playing in front of his Mom for the first time. Watts scored 21 points and dished out four assists. There are no reports of where Watts is heading yet.

Despite that, Tom Izzo now has a “Tom Izzo” guy to replace Watts.
