The Detroit Red Wings have placed forward Jakub Vrana on waivers. Vrana, who was in Grand Rapids for conditioning, is back on the open market.  With Robby Fabbri returning, the Red Wings needed to free up a roster spot. No one could have predicted this.

Detroit, having many young producing forwards, along with three goaltenders because of struggles in the net, certainly could’ve played a part in the decision. Besides this, Vrana has a salary cap hit of 5.25 million this year that will increase to 5.75 million moving into next season. Steve Yzerman could think that he will clear waivers and remain in Grand Rapids, because of his high contract and Vrana not quite being up to speed yet.

While we are unsure of the exact reason behind the decision, whether it was a lingering issue behind the scenes, or just a move based on the best interest of the team moving forward. The smoke will soon clear, but as it stands, Jakub Vrana’s time in the Winged Wheel may have come to an end.
