The Red Wings avoided a late collapse in Edmonton beating the Oilers 5-4 in a shootout to extend their win streak to four. Pius Suter snuck the game winning goal past Jack Campbell to cap the night off. Detroit Goaltender Ville Husso was brick wall in net for the Red Wings. Husso faced 45 shots, making 41 saves meanwhile shut down the Oilers in the shootout to secure a much needed two points.
Dylan Larkin continued to his hot streak recording two points on the night (1G,1A). Dylan started off the night scoring his 21st goal of the year, Larkin leads the NHL with 19 game-opening goals dating back to last season. After tonight’s win, Larkin now has 52 points in 52 games.
Coach Lalonde spoke about the win and just how starting the game hot has affected their confidence.
I liked how we managed some parts of our game. Obviously putting them on the power play early in the third with the two goal lead was not ideal. A team like that, there’s many ways you can fuel ’em. One of them has been put them on the power play and obviously they scored. I think that led to us being our heels a little bit.
But I thought after that at 4-4, we managed it really well. Got an unbelievable penalty kill late in the game. All in all, a really good road win against a very good team that’s been playing extremely well of late and another quality start two goals in the first period here helped a lot today.
Moritz Seider vs Connor McDavid
Moritz Seider showed tonight why he is a top defensemen in this league. Seider went toe-to-toe with NHL’s leading scorer, and never shied away from the moment. Mo’ made multiple great plays on both ends on the ice including winning a one on one battle against McDavid in crunch time.
Derek Lalonde talked after the game about the all around impact Seider had on tonight’s game.
He was excellent. Playing them period is uncomfortable (Edmonton). Especially playing them on the road where they get the matchup. They get the last change. You get stuck in some bad matchup. So he’s going on and off, on and off just trying to chase that match. When he was out there, he did an excellent job even getting caught out with McDavid, on some one-on-ones and overtime he managed it extremely well. He was huge defensively for us.
