Michigan’s Hunter Dickinson has the opportunity to accomplish a feat that only one other Wolverine has, and that’s winning the Naismith College Player of the Year.

The ten semifinalists for the award were revealed Thursday afternoon, with the Freshman center earning recognition.

It should come as a shock to no one due to Dickinson’s play this season. While Michigan arguably has the best team in the country, Dickinson’s game stands out above the rest. He’s currently averaging 14.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.6 blocks per game, which are team highs.

The announcement of the remaining four finalists will be on March 17th.

As mentioned above, Dickinson has a rare opportunity. Wolverines winning the Naismith College Player of the Year honors is a rare feat. The first (and last) one to do so was Trey Burke in 2013. Burke posted 18.6 points and 6.7 assists per game that season, leading the Wolverines to a national championship appearance.

Michigan is currently 18-2 this season. They have two games left, both against in-state rival Michigan State, before the Big Ten Tournament starts.

Now let’s be realistic.

With Dickinson being on this list, he does have the opportunity to win the honors. However, his chances are very slim at best. Iowa’s Luka Garza is a prohibited favorite to take home the award.

The season that Dickinson has had so far puts Michigan at the forefront of No. 1 overall seed conversations for the NCAA tournament.
