Harbaugh drama is becoming as predictable as his wardrobe, but those khakis appear to be tightening. Jim Harbaugh to the Denver Broncos is a very real possibility. In fact, Harbaugh could very realistically rebuild the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff that surrounded him during his last stint in the NFL.

Rebuild the 49ers

According to The Athletic’s Mike Sando, sources close to Harbaugh have said that he is keen on returning to the NFL. In his Pick 6 piece, Sando quotes a former associate of Harbaugh who believes the former Michigan coach will take the job in Denver if it is offered to him. “He will flat go to Denver,” said the anonymous associate. “[Harbaugh] is not thinking about any of that stuff. He will just go take it, in my opinion. He thought he was going to get the Vikings job last year and it didn’t happen.”

Potential Offensive and Defensive Coordinators

Sando also spoke with a former assistant to Harbaugh, who praised the coach’s approach and the way he empowers his staff.   “[Harbaugh] is worried about capturing an edge with the way you travel, having players over to his house, throwing and catching with his quarterbacks, all those things,” said the assistant. “He is as good as his staff is, and guess what? He believes in them. He is counting on you…empowered you. [Harbaugh] is intense. He is going into battle with you. He is leading the way. That is why he goes after Vic Fangio to be his defensive coordinator.”

Vic Fangio 49ers

Vic Fangio was Jim Harbaughs DC in San Francisco

It’s worth noting that Vic Fangio was Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator during his time with the 49ers.  Many around the organization still hold him in high regard after he previously served as the Broncos Head Coach from 2019 to 2021. Furthermore, Harbaugh may look to reunite with former offensive coordinator with the 49ers, Greg Roman. Roman is currently the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens and people believe that he would be open to a move if Harbaugh is able to convince his brother John to let him go.

Greg Roman

Greg Roman was Harbaugh’s OC while in San Francisco

To Jim’s credit, he truly has adapted and modernized his offense in recent years. We all know, though, that if given the chance he will take every opportunity to run the ball down the defense’s throat. Who better to lead a run-heavy offense right now than Greg Roman? This is how Harbaugh plans to rebuild the 49ers coaching staff.

The Competition

Sean Payton, the former New Orleans Saints Head Coach, is also a top candidate for the Broncos job. The Denver Broncos are considering former NFL Head Coaches Dan Quinn and Raheem Morris as potential candidates. They are also considering what would be a first-time Head Coach, DeMeco Ryans of the 49ers.

Conclusion

Harbaugh drama is something that we expect, but there remains a lot of smoke surrounding his potential move to Denver. However, It seems that the Broncos’ job is his if he truly wants it. With a situation that fits his personality well, we shall see if he ends up in the Mile High City.
