Woodward Sports is down in Lakeland for Detroit Tigers Spring Training. Here are some observations from the early morning workouts, as the weather is the exact opposite of the current situation in Michigan.
Slow go for the Detroit Tigers rotation.
Similar to last season, Tigers manager A. J. Hinch is not defining roles in the bullpen and will have them go multiple innings.
“There’s a variety of guys that we don’t want to just put in the bullpen and only use them for three out, and we’re going to be very disciplined with our rampant of the season for our starters and none of our starters had complete seasons last year. They’re all coming off the shorter workloads. So if we can team up as we get into the season, then that could be a strategy that we, that we optimize staff as a whole just to see so many injuries guys are coming back going through.”
The Tigers went through 17 starters last season, losing Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal for the season because of injuries. With Spencer Turnbull and even Matt Boyd expected to start, Detroit will have to watch their innings closely.
Hinch on using César Hernández, who the Tigers signed to a minor league deal. Hernández’s offense numbers dropped off last season, but Hinch won’t let 2022 define him.
Yeah, it’s important with veteran players to take a longer look at what they can do to see if they can help you. He’s been pretty good at a variety of positions. When warranted a look, we do like to switch hit ability.we’re putting him at third base, will be at second base today, so we’re trying to increase the versatility on the infield, and when he’s writing, when he’s in the strike zone, he can do some damage. So, it’s good for us to have veteran players who have been around the league who have been on good teams.
Happy Birthday to a Hall 0f Famer
Channel 7’s Brad Galli stopped and talk to Alan Trammell. Trammell was out there today with the players, helping them through field drills. But listen close. There was one line that stood out during the morning sessions. “There’s opportunity here. Take it and run with it”. Check out the rest of the interview.
