The Detroit Lions have locked up their franchise quarterback, Jared Goff, with a historic contract extension. The Lions have signed Goff to a four-year, $212 million extension, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero. This deal, finalized just days after general manager Brad Holmes labeled it a “high priority,” ensures Goff’s presence in Detroit through 2027, with an option for 2028.

Jared Goff is the Latest Lion to be Rewarded

Goff’s new contract, averaging $53 million per year, places him second only to Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow for the highest annual quarterback salary. This extension follows significant financial moves by the Lions, including star wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown’s four-year deal with $77 million guaranteed and offensive lineman Penei Sewell’s record-setting four-year, $112 million extension.

 

Goff’s Career Year

Goff’s recent performance justifies the investment. He completed 67.3% of his passes for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season. The Lions won their first division title since 1993 and their first playoff game since 1991. Detroit tied a franchise record with 12 wins and set a new record with nine 30-point games in a single season.

Historic Postseason Achievements

In the playoffs, Goff made history by breaking decade-long playoff win droughts for two different teams, joining Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as the only quarterbacks to record 14-win seasons (including playoffs) with multiple teams. His leadership was instrumental in transforming the Lions into a competitive force.

Offensive Milestones

Goff led the Lions to a historic season, becoming the first NFL team with four players each posting 850 scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns (David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Sam LaPorta). This achievement marked the first time the Lions had a running back, tight end, and wide receiver each register 10 touchdowns in the same season. 

The Lions amassed 4,000 net passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards in the same season for only the second time in franchise history. Additionally, they achieved over 25 passing touchdowns and 25 rushing touchdowns in a single campaign for the first time ever.

Goff’s Journey to Detroit

Goff was drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Rams in 2016. Over five years with the Rams, he compiled a 42-27 record and led them to a Super Bowl appearance. In a significant trade, the Rams sent Goff and three draft picks to Detroit in exchange for Matthew Stafford. Since joining the Lions, Goff has a 24-23-1 record, completing 66.5% of his passes for 12,258 yards, 78 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions.

Resurgence in Detroit

Goff’s success has mirrored Detroit’s resurgence. His performance has revived his career while propelling the Lions to new heights. This extension solidifies their partnership, offering a promising future for both Goff and the Lions.
