Detroit Tigers committed three errors in the fifth inning as the Twins pull away and sweep the Tigers.

There is so much you can say when you are watching a game. You look for the positives and try to keep perspective. You say to yourself, “it’s only April” over and over. The Detroit Tigers have had injuries to deal with ranging to their starting rotation, (Casey Mize, Matt Manning) bullpen (Kyle Funkhouser, Jose Cisnero) and the offense (Riley Greene, Javier Baez, Victor Reyes) and that provides logic and perspective on the struggles.

But the loss today was ugly. Harold Castro, who had his 3^rd multiple hit game of the season, played third and he had a hard time fielding a bunt not once, but twice, the second time being in the fifth inning.

That inning broke the game wide-open as the Twins would score four times. Both Tucker Barnhart and Harold Castro had throwing errors that placed Spencer Torkelson in a dangerous position where he could have faced some sort of hard contact on the baseline. Thursday’s loss to the Twins was their 17th in the last 21 games at Target Field.

The Detroit Tigers’ offense continues to struggle

Detroit is tied with Baltimore for the lowest isolated power (ISO) at .093 and the Tigers have just 8 home runs. Torkelson leads the team with three and even with missing time, Baez is second with two.

The struggles of Akil Baddoo so far are well documented. Even on the road, he has struggled. In 10 plate appearances, he is 0-for-10 with a walk and four strikeouts.

As fans already want to make changes, the question is then who? You currently have an infielder in Willi Castro playing the outfield. Down in Toledo, you can have either Daz Cameron, Kody Clemens or Zack Short who could play the outfield if need be, but Clemens and Short are both infielders.

Oh, before the chants for Ryan Kreidler to place Jonathan Schoop at 2^nd base or Candelario at 3^rd, he hit the IL today down in Omaha. The Tigers would have to make a move for that to happen, as he is not on the 40-man roster. Plus, with the extended roster, Detroit is using that extra spot for more pitching.

Detroit is heading to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers, who lead the league in run differential at +44 and ERA. Until this team gets healthier, or the bats get warm, Detroit Tigers fans will have to wait and see if they can repeat their late May-June 2021 surge.
