Week 2 of XFL compete is in the books as there remain only three undefeated teams in the league. The St. Louis Battlehawks won earlier during the week, making it hard for any team playing them to count them out when they don’t have the lead. But who joins them as they sit at 2-0? Let’s recap some action of Week 2.
DC Defenders vs Vegas Vipers
The Battlehawks may have the better skilled players, but the Defenders are still the top team in the power rankings. They proved it on Saturday by beating the Vipers in a low scoring game 18-6. The Defenders fell behind in the first half because of sloppy play, but cleaned it up in the second. DC used a combination of quarterbacks and running backs to rush for a combined 231 yards and two touchdowns. Add in a dominate defense to Abram Smith and Ryquell Armstead rushing attacks and the Defenders were able to grind out a win. They left Vegas with a 2-0 record and could be a favorite to win it all later on this season.
San Antonio Brahmas vs Orlando Guardians
I like the Brahmas, mainly because I feel like they’re the Rock’s team, but also Hines Ward is the head coach. So I’hope that the experience and the namesake will push them through the season. But maybe I should root for the Brahmas quarterback, Jack Coan as well. He’s got the experience in college from Wisconsin and Norte Dame but went undrafted in 2022.
Even though his NFL career hasn’t gone as planned, his XFL career is blossoming as he has a 67% completion rating over the last two games. Against the Guardians, he threw for 167 yards and three touchdowns as the Brahmas rolled to a 30-12 victory. Orlando has some work to do as they are 0-2 for the season and committed 13 penalties. Guardians QB Paxton Lynch is struggling right now and I’m not sure if they can turn it around next week against the Renegades.
Arlington Renegades vs Houston Roughnecks
The night cap of week 2 was a bit of a battle. As Wade Phillips Roughneck team looks to be legit threats after beating the Renegades 23-14. Houston’s defense is the best in the league and didn’t hold back on Arlington’s quarterback, Drew Plitt. Holding the Renegades offense to 120 yards passing and just 43 yards rushing. Houston’s defense is dominating and their offense is getting just enough out of their group to keep them winning. QB Brandon Silver threw for two touchdown passes, and running back Max Borghi ran for one as well. Putting them at 2-0 in the XFL South division.
Final Thoughts
After two weeks, the Battlehawks, Roughneck and Defenders are your three unbeaten teams. Although next week that will all change as St. Louis and DC will play each other on Sunday. Three teams are sitting at 0–2 records but have been competitive in their losses. Failing to close out wins and quarterback switches are hurting teams early on in the season. As week 3 approaches, here’s to hoping we see some strong offense from these teams falling behind.
