During a recent interview with BT Sports, Dana White stated that the rematch between McGregor and Poirier is pointless if it doesn’t happen at Lightweight. McGregor vs Poirier is scheduled to take place in late January but neither fighter has signed a contract for the fight. As a die hard fan of the Lightweight division I’m happy we have some clarity as to what division this fight will take place. White is right, it makes no sense to have McGregor and Poirier at Welterweight. Why would you want the fight at 170 when both have fought for the title at 155? Conor wanted 170 so it would be almost no weight cut, but it has to happen at 155 to give a clearer picture of who deserves the next title shot.
McGregor vs Poirier 2 At 155lbs Is A Title Shot Fight
Khabib Nurmagomedov has made it clear multiple times that he has no plans of giving McGregor a rematch. Nurmagomedov would rather get the W this weekend against Justin Gaethje, fight GSP at catchweight, and retire at 30-0. McGregor needs the rematch more than Khabib. If the rematch doesn’t happen I think McGregor will focus once again on boxing and cash in as much as he can. You can only hint at retirement so many times before people lose faith on you ever returning, and clearly McGregor is all about making as much money as possible. McGregor doesn’t want to fight 4 times a year for the UFC. Anyone who truly believes that is a fool. Conor wants to come in, fight for a big purse, and run off to the bank.
If Poirier beats McGregor, it will skyrocket Poirier to a new level of stardom. Khabib became a household name after he mauled McGregor for 4 rounds and then subbed him. If Poirier can knock out or pull off a submission win he will get a Lightweight title shot. In my opinion the chances of him beating Khabib are slim to none, but could you imagine Poirier vs Gaethje 2? Insane. I’d take that fight over Khabib vs Poirier any day.
This fight is a title eliminator fight. Period. Sure, McGregor and Poirier have only fought once this year, but both put on amazing performances. McGregor knocked out Cowboy Cerrone in Jaunary and Dustin Poirier put on a FOTY performance againgst Dan Hooker in June. I’m still not 100% certain Dustin and Conor will fight, but if it does happen it has to take place at 155.
