Leon Edwards vs Khamzat Chimaev Set To Take Place On Fight Island
Dana White announced during a recent interview that the highly anticipated match between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev in the works for January 20th on Fight Island. After testing positive for COVID, Leon Edwards was forced to pull out of his bout against Khamzat Chimaev. According to Dana White the fight will headline the card and will be a part of International Fight Week. The fight isn’t 100% confirmed, but I’m willing to bet if White is talking about it the chances of it happening are pretty solid.
Khamzat Looking To Enter The Top 10 Rankings With A Win Over Edwards
Chiamev has had a breakout year with three wins all ending in finishes in 2020. The only other fighter that can compare is Kevin Holland. Chimaev is 3-0 in the octagon, with all of his fights ending by either KO or submission. He also holds the record for the fastest three fight winning streak in the UFC history at 66 days. In those 66 days he has adsorbed a total of two strikes and has landed 196 strikes.
A win over Edwards would be huge for Chimaev and proof that he can hang with the best in the division. Edwards is no walk in the park and is currently sitting at #3 in the Welterweight rankings. I can only assume that Chimaev would enter the Top 10 with a win over Leon. It will be interesting to see how the UFC builds the rest of this card considering they usually stack International Fight Week cards. Sure, it can’t get much bigger than a Conor McGregor card, but to hardcore MMA fans 2020 has been a real treat. This year has been a real special one for the UFC. Stacked cards, fighting through a pandemic, and creating stars through this whole mess has really elevated the UFC.
