The Detroit Lions collapsed under pressure on Christmas Eve.  Their Week 16 matchup against the Carolina Panthers ended in a brutal 37-23 loss, snapping their three-game winning streak and dropping their record to 7-8.  The Lions’ atrocious performance has fans blowing up the Twitter feed this evening.

The Lions had been playing like one of the best teams in the NFL over the last seven weeks. Today, they played the worst defensive ball they have all season. Panthers controlled the game on both sides of the ball from the first snap of the game.  Panthers’ running backs D’Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard were absolutely unstoppable.  Carolina managed to rush for 320 yards, the most in franchise history.  Head Coach Dan Campbell spoke on the Lions’ performance after the game.

“You get what you deserve in this league. That’s why you love it. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s also why I love it, man. And we all love it. If you’re a true competitor, we got exactly what we deserved today. I mean, by the way we played we deserved that, and just like we deserve what happened to us before that. By the way we played, we earned it. We earned what we got today, and we earned the six wins before that.”

Offensively, Jared Goff and the offensive line struggled against a dominant Panthers’ defense.  Goff took quite the beating, especially at the very end of the game when he was targeted twice in a row.  Before that, he was sacked twice, fumbled, and had several passes deflected.

The run game was completely nonexistent leaving air mail as the only way to move the ball.  In the coldest Panthers game in Bank of America Stadium history, throwing the ball was not easy.  Goff did, however, manage to throw 25 completions for 344 yards and three touchdowns.

While not guaranteed, the Lions still have a chance of getting into the postseason.  After a performance like today, they will need to step it up big time for the last two games, and Lions fans are not being quiet about their opinions.  Fans stormed to Twitter to share their thoughts after the Christmas Eve nightmare they just experienced.
