The Detroit Lions have the chance to complete the most historic in-season turnaround in NFL history.
Looking for examples of the greatest in-season turnarounds in NFL history? These three teams completed a turnaround season and made it to the playoffs despite difficult starts.
The 2007 New York Giants
The Giants were well on their way to another top draft pick before a sharp 180. They started the season with a 0-2 record, but then won 10 of their remaining 14 games to snatch a playoff spot. A 13-yard fade from Eli Manning to former Michigan State Spartan legend Plaxico Burress sealed the deal in Super Bowl XLII. It was the final shot in the knee to the Patriots near-perfect season.
The 1992 San Diego Chargers
The biggest in-season turnarounds in NFL history. Bobby Ross had just wrapped up a historic season leading Georgia Tech to a share of the National Championship when the Chargers came calling. The ‘Bolts started the season with a 0-4 record, but then won 11 of their remaining 12 games to finish with an 11-5 record and a playoff birth. Dan Fouts was out-dueled by Dan Marino in the playoffs, and drifted into quarterback mediocrity. Bobby Ross eventually drifted to Detroit.
The 2015 Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs started bad. Like, really bad. They started the season with a 1-5 record before the Gods remembered that Alex Smith was their quarterback. They won 9 of their remaining 11 games to finish with a 10-6 record and sneak into the playoffs. Travis Kelce emerged as a weapon this season and the Chiefs began their process of pursuing Patrick Mahomes.
These are some of the most significant turnaround seasons in NFL history, but certainly not the only ones. What other NFL turnarounds stand out to you?!
