After a huge three game sweep of the New York Mets, the Detroit Tigers will turn their attention to St. Louis. The struggling Cardinals will welcome Detroit in for a three game set.
Pitching Matchups
The Detroit Tigers will send Matthew Boyd to the hill in game one. He will be opposed by Jordan Montgomery who was acquired by St. Louis last year from the Yankees. Boyd is coming off a rough start where he gave up six earned runs against the Orioles and will look to get back on track.
Another potential hall of famer will make his season debut against Detroit, as Adam Wainwright will take the mound in game two. The 41 year old will be opposed by Spencer Turnbull, who is also looking to get on track for Detroit, as his ERA is sitting at 6.84 to start the year.
Steven Matz will get the start in game three for St. Louis. He has struggled in his time with the Cardinals, as his ERA is currently over six as well. Joey Wentz will likely get the start in game three after giving up five runs to the Mets on Wednesday.
The Detroit Tigers team ERA sits at 4.52 which is good for 17th in baseball, the Cardinals sit at 21 with an ERA of 4.70.
How the Offenses Match Up
The St. Louis Cardinals despite their struggles, still have a potent offense. Their team OPS sits at .738 which is good for 13th in baseball. The Tigers still sit at 30th with a team OPS of .643.
Eric Haase and Javier Baez came up big in the series against the Mets so Tigers fans are hoping that is a sign of things to come. Riley Greene despite homering against Verlander, is still struggling to get the ball in the air and is striking out at a very high rate. Greene as well as Spencer Torkelson will look to be more consistent for Detroit in the month of May.
The Cardinals offense will be tough to handle. Lead by Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, St. Louis’ lineup is still arguably one of the best in baseball. Nolan Gorman a 22 year old, has burst onto the scene for St. Louis, as well as shortstop Tommy Edman.
