The Detroit Lions are in desperate need for a true number one receiver for this upcoming season. Quintez Cephus comes to mind when thinking about potential breakout stars for this receiving core. Cephus was selected in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft and was not thought of much after that. Cephus was behind Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones on the depth chart, which hampered his playing time.

Passive college career

Cephus attended the University of Wisconsin where he didn’t breakout until his senior season. Cephus had his first 100 yard game against Purdue in his sophomore season at Wisconsin. Later that year he broke his leg against Indiana that forced him to miss the rest of the season. Cephus had some off the field issues that forced him to miss his junior year. His senior season he posted 59 receptions with 901 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Limited in Detroit

Cephus joined the Detroit Lions and many thought he would not have a significant role. That may have been right, but Cephus put up a decent stat line considering his limited playing time. Cephus posted 349 yards on 20 receptions along with 2 touchdowns.

Cephus may have not had the numbers to look like a star but he flashed his capabilities to be a true number one receiver. Cephus has elite route running skills along with good separation. He has the ability to become a star considering the Lions do not have many options other than TJ Hockenson.

I believe that Dan Campbell and Co. have good things for Quintez Cephus and to expand his usage with Jared Goff. Dan Campbell told reporters “Over the past four practices, Q.C. has really come on. We all see it. We feel like he’s growing right in front of us.”
