#2 ranked UFC Lightweight Dustin Poirier says if Khabib Nurmagomedov is really hanging up the gloves then his fight with Conor McGregor should be for the belt. In a recent interview Poirier made the suggestion and said the division simply has to move on.
I think if Khabib’s retired and not coming back, then I’m next in line for the title shot, and this could be the title fight. This could be for the undisputed belt. I think that’d make sense. Dana’s saying one thing, Khabib’s saying another. Who knows what the truth is? Time will tell. The division has to move on.

Who Should Fight For The Vacant Lightweight Belt?
Khabib Nurmagomedov shocked the MMA world after announcing his retiring at UFC 254. Hanging the gloves up at 29-0 is GOAT status, but what should the UFC do now? With Dana White meeting with Khabib to discuss what the future holds for Khabib’s career we will soon find out, but I honestly don’t think Khabib is coming back. I think the UFC needs to take a serious look at the division and base fights off of RANKINGS not UFC star power.
Lets be honest, Dana White wants nothing more than for McGregor to win the belt, but it would just stall the division. McGregor winning the belt would possibly be the worst thing that could happen in the Lightweight division. He fights maybe once a year now and the division is already in shambles thanks to Khabib’s retirement. I think it should be Dustin Poirier vs Justin Gathje for the Lightwelt belt should Poirier win at UFC 257. Should McGregor win he can face Justin Gaethje to determine the real LW champ.
