Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan only got it partially right. He appeared at Ford Field to pump up the return of the USFL Michigan Panthers to our state.
“The way the Lions were going at the end with that turnaround, we wanted more, and now we are going to have more football in April,” Duggan said.
I am a fan of football, but not a fan of more football in April. I could have used a few more weeks of Lions or NFL football, but not football in general. Count me out as a guy who wants more football in April. We need a break.
You can do what you want, but I am not buying into the USFL. People believe you can jam football down the throats of fans anytime, anywhere. That’s not true for most of us. There is a reason why we have baseball season and football season and basketball season.
Enjoy the hell out of it when the sport is in season. When it’s not we have other sports to enjoy. We need a break from everything – even football.
I want you to think of your favorite food. Do you eat it every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner? No. You need a break from it.
The belief that you can just roll our 22 guys with a football and we will watch and get all excited about a team is simply not true. The USFL will hang around a few years and disappear again because not enough people care.
The Panthers will try to lure you in by rostering local college and high school players. But did you really care that former University of Michigan product Shea Patterson quarterbacked the 2-8 Panthers last season?
It didn’t move me to watch games on television and I’m guessing that’s true with the majority of you.
