Matthew Boyd is off to a horrible start this season.
5 years ago the Detroit Tigers traded David Price for Matthew Boyd, Daniel Norris and Jairo Labourt. This trade is looking worse and worse every day. Norris we have to give a pass to, cancer will weaken anyone. I’m so happy hes been able to fight it off. Boyd on the other hand, has had opportunity and he has the talent to be better.
Matthew Boyd in 2019
In his first start for the Detroit Tigers he posted two 10 strikeout games to start the season. The first Tigers pitcher to do so since 1908. Then he had a great game against the White Sox where he struck out 13 and walked 0. The first pitcher in the live ball era to do so! After that it was all down hill. In his final 17 starts he had a 6.44 ERA and gave up 33 HR’s over 116 inning.

So far Boyd is 0-2 through 4 starts. He may only see 12 starts this season, so 1/3rd of the season is done. He has a Major League worst 10.24 ERA. So when I say “worst pitcher in baseball”, I’m not trying to be mean. It’s just what the numbers are telling me right now.
Matthew Boyd Beyond
I dont like to give up on guys. espeically guys that have shown they can do it at a Major League level. Boyd will rebound at some point this season. If he can get back to .500 that would be a major win for him and the Detroit Tigers.
Al Avila seems to be pretty set in not trading Boyd. At this point I’m not sure he’d be able to get any value back for him. So you might as well ride it out and hope for the best!
“That’s my battle right now, and that’s what I’m working through. I’m going to continue to get better at it. I promise everybody out there, including my team, I will be better from this, and I’m going to continue to work.” Boyd said. I believe him.
