The Detroit Lions’ latest move regarding Jared Goff signals that he’ll be around for the next few seasons.

On Wednesday morning, ESPN’s Field Yates tweeted that the Lions restructured Goff’s contract. As part of the restructuring, the Lions converted $20M of Goff’s deal into a signing bonus. By doing this, the Lions will free up $15M in cap space in 2021. Yates’ tweet further states that the move adds $5M in cap charges to Goff’s deal over the next two seasons.

After the Lions acquired him in the Matthew Stafford trade, there was much speculation regarding Goff’s future in Detroit.

Before his arrival, reports circulated that Lions head coach Dan Campbell prefers a mobile quarterback. And needless to say, Goff doesn’t fit that mold. With the No.7 overall pick, there is a possibility the Lions could move up in the draft to snag a QB.

Or they could roll the dice and let him fall in their lap.

With prohibited No.1 pick Trevor Lawrence seemingly headed to the Jaguars, the Lions would be looking at BYU’s Zach Wilson, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. And if the mock drafts are any indicator, those three QBs won’t be available to Detroit at No. 7

Despite Campbell’s remarks, the restructuring of Goff’s deal signals the Lions have faith that he is the guy they want under center.

At least for the next two seasons, anyway.
