Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani proposed a must-win game for the Detroit Lions.
He claims that Michigan’s Upper Peninsula should belong to Wisconsin. He wondered if the two states have fought for the UP. His solution is for the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions play a game for the rights to the UP.
I’m all for it but it is a game the Lions cannot lose. The UP and Picture Rocks, Tahquamenon Falls, the Sault Locks all belong to Michigan. We fought Ohio and lost Toledo for the right to call the UP ours. We should not give it up.
I say let’s push for this Packers-Lions winner take all game while the Lions are hot. I’m certain coach Dan Campbell could motivate his men to win one for the ganders. Aaron Rodgers is likely gone for this game and I have faith in a Jerad Goff versus Jordan Love matchup.
“I wonder if they’ve ever had a land dispute, Michigan and Wisconsin,” Giuliani joked on his podcast. “Maybe when the Lions and Packers play, they’d fight that out on the football field.”
What would college football look like in the UP?
Would Wisconsin Tech and Northern Wisconsin join the GLIAC? Do they also get Mackinac Island or is that considered to be in the LP?
Michigan did not fight Wisconsin for the UP. But it battled Ohio in a joke of a war called the Toledo War. Militias from both states taunted each other across the Maumee River. Congress later reached a compromise. In admitting Michigan to statehood it gave Toledo to Ohio and the UP to Michigan.
Michigan also got a nickname out of the deal. The Ohio bastards said the Michigan troops were ornery like wolverines. We adopted the nickname as did the University of Michigan Wolverines.
Hey Dan Campbell, the Lions cannot lose this game and Michigan cannot lose the UP.
