41-Year-Old Teixeira Wants A Shot At The LHW Belt
Glover Teixeira dominated Thiago Santos in the thrid round on Saturday night to earn his fifth straight win. Now the UFC veteran wants his shot at the Light . Teixeira weathered through the storm in the first and second round before taking the fight to the ground in the third. Teixeira secured a rear naked choke and forced Santos to tap at 1:49 in the third round. After the fight, Teixeira made it clear what fight he wants next.
“Five fights in a row beating the same guys, it’s not easy.” – Glover Teixeira
Teixeira now has the second most wins in UFC Light Heavyweight history with 15. Jones still holds the #1 spot with 20, but at 41-years-old Teixeira wants a crack at UFC gold. It’s shocking to me that Teixeira didn’t get a $50,000 bonus for his performance against Santos. Glover always puts on a show and has now won 6 of his last 7 fights. The MMA veteran deserves a shot at the belt, but with Adesanya facing Jan Blachowicz in 2021 for the LHW title Glover will most likely have to wait. Here’s what Dana White had to say about Teixeira’s performance on Saturday night…
“I was sitting listening to him give his interview, he’s not wrong. It’s like, ‘I deserve the shot, I’ve been here forever.’ He’s on a streak, he looked great tonight. What’s funny is, every time I count this guy and think that I don’t know if you got it in you, he proves me wrong. He looked incredible tonight.”
Dana White
This is another example of how “double champ” fights just screw up divisions. If Adesanya wins against Blachowicz he’ll become the champ at 185 and 205. Sure, it’s a huge accomplishment, but moving up and down the division ladder just stalls the divisions. I think after 5 straight wins Glover definitely deserves a shot at the belt, but the UFC is more concerned about super fights and not division integrity.
