Boxing has always been a sport of champions, proving to the masses who is superior in the art of fighting. In the boxing world their have been many greats that have came before us to pave the way for boxing. Ali, Tyson, Holyfield, Duran even Frazier all had one thing in common, and that was the love and heart for the sport. These fighters of the past were feared and respected in their own ways.

Fast forward to present day boxing and the joke that it is. We had Floyd Mayweather, one of the greatest boxers of our generation, against a loser YouTube star in Logan Paul.

Mayweather’s legacy

Floyd Mayweather is arguably one of the greatest boxers to step into the ring but has met some backlash. Whether it was he fought in a weak era or that he would always dance around the ring and fight defensively. As a fan of boxing, I can say that you can not ignore Mayweather’s 50-0 record. Mayweather has been knocked down one time in 50 professional fights. The abilities of Floyd are endless and should be recognized.

The last fight Mayweather was involved in was against UFC fighter Conor McGregor. In my opinion that fight was more exciting to watch and was more legit. Both fighter showed heart and even though it was for the money they both competed. Their were strikes landing by both and they seemed like they wanted to knock each other out.

My issue with last nights fight is that boxing has lost all credibility. The sport itself has fallen off of a cliff in the past ten years and simply looks to keep trending that way. With the UFC rolling along and attracting more fans I can not see boxing ascending back to that level.

Credibility lost

Not only has the sport of boxing lost all credibility but I believe that Mayweather has lost some as well. This fight should have never happened. A YouTube star has no business being in the ring with someone of Mayweather caliber, I don’t care that he is 44 years old it just shouldn’t happen. if this sport wants to gain any momentum with its true fans they need to get away from these celebrity fights and get back to real boxing.

Rules agreed upon

Of course for Mayweather there were stipulations and rules for this fight. No judges, win by KO or TKO and eight three minute rounds. These rules sounded a lot like a money grab and a fight that would not hurt his legacy. In my opinion this damaged his legacy and will always stick with him as a bogus fight that was just simply for the money and not for the passion of the sport.

I firmly believe that you would not have seen Ali get in the ring with some Hollywood star. Even Tyson would not play around like this.

The fight

The fight got off to a horrible start, all there was to talk about in the first round was dancing around. The rounds continued on and Paul proved his inexperience looking exhausted. Floyd continued to back down Paul and he looked scared to throw a strike. Mayweather dodged most of everything Paul threw his way. Floyd countered many of Paul’s shaky punches. He also connected on many jabs and hooks and seemed to be in control of the fight. The fight went the full eight rounds and of course no winner decided on.

Mayweather was the better fighter of the night. Both fighters were joyful at the end and spoke highly of each other. Paul proved that he could be carried by a 44 year old and even take a few shots to the chin. An embarrassment for boxing and the trend is continuing with Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley slated for August 28th.
