The Detroit Pistons can’t seem to catch a break in regards to the injury bug. Marvin Bagley more specifically has had a rough start to the season missing time with a sprained knee. This go around he sustained a hand injury according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

He reported that the Pistons big man has an injured right hand that will have him sidelined for an “extended amount of time.” Further evaluations will be needed to determine best recovery methods.

It will be interesting to see what corresponding move Troy Weaver will make. But the more pressing matter is if coach Dwane Casey splits up the big man pairing of Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren. Or if he chooses to go with Nerlens Noel, whom he called a “break glass in case of emergency” option.

Marvin Bagley’s talent was not questioned much when acquired by the Pistons. And his pick and roll connection with Cade Cunningham quickly validated those feelings. But his injury history was a concern. After a good showing last season, the Pistons signed Bagley to a three year, $37.5M contract extension.

The obvious hope is that it’s nothing too serious, even if he has to miss the rest of this season. Next season is the year the team will have star Cade Cunningham back from surgery. And Troy Weaver will have a full compliment of off-season assets to expend during the NBA draft and free agency.

It would be good for the Pistons to bolster the front court heading into next season. My thought is that’s high on Troy Weavers list of “to-do’s”.

Jalen Duren will now have even more responsibility thrown his way. But so far the rookie has seemed to handle the pressure well. It will be good to see how he responds to any opportunity that may arise from the unfortunate Bagley injury news.
