The NBA announced the results for all-rookie first and second teams with a pair of Detroit Pistons present. Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren each made the second team, with some observers believing Ivey might’ve been snubbed.

Ivey outperformed players like Indiana Pacers Bennedict Mathurin, but team success has played a big part in the voting in recent years. It seems a backwards with the worst teams generally selecting in the lottery giving Ivey a more difficult path to wins. That shouldn’t cost him recognition, but it is consistent with them trend that also hurt Cade Cunningham in last years rookie of the year voting.

2022-23 KIA NBA ALL-ROOKIE FIRST TEAM:

• Paolo Banchero, Orlando Magic
• Walker Kessler, Utah Jazz
• Bennedict Mathurin, Indiana Pacers
• Keegan Murray, Sacramento Kings
• Jalen Williams, Oklahoma City Thunder

2022-23 KIA NBA ALL-ROOKIE SECOND TEAM:

• Jalen Duren, Detroit Pistons
• Tari Eason, Houston Rockets
• Jaden Ivey, Detroit Pistons
• Jabari Smith Jr., Houston Rockets
• Jeremy Sochan, San Antonio Spurs

Jaden Ivey Deserved Better

Jaden Ivey made a great case for the first team with season averages of 16.3 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. And Ivey did so with balanced shooting percentages from all three scoring levels — Three point, mid range and in the paint.

Ivey also led all rookies in assists per game as well as total assists despite playing in 74 of 82 regular season games. Despite missing out on the fist team all-rookie, the Detroit Pistons still consider this season a success for the rookies. Dwane Casey said Ives’s development was “the goal of this season”, and that he knew Duren would never spend time in the G-League.

Ultimately it all comes down to wins and losses with the team setting a goal of next season to make the play-in tournament. They are tired of the losing and for a second season in a row it cost deserving Pistons players of recognition. It’s not the end of the world, but hopefully these slights are used to grow that chip on their shoulders for even greater motivation.

The Bad Boys and Going to work Pistons had unfortunate shortcomings early that helped shape their characters for greatness later.

Maybe for Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren and even Cade Cunningham, this is just the start of something better.
