The Detroit Lions have until 4 p.m. on Tuesday to trim their roster down to 53 players. Despite that, they’ve added a new target at wide receiver. Mike Klis of KUSA reported that the Denver Broncos are sending Trinity Benson to the Lions.
Coming with Benson will be the Broncos’ sixth-round pick in 2023. In exchange, the Lions will give up their fifth and seventh-round picks in 2022.
The Lions landing Benson comes off the heels of Breshad Perriman’s release on Monday morning. Additionally, the Lions have waived Victor Bolden and Geronimo Allison, all at the same position.
Benson had a respectable showing for the Broncos throughout this preseason. He tallied eight receptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Two of Benson’s preseason touchdowns happened during the Broncos’ 33-6 victory in the first of the preseason. He also chipped in four catches for 36 yards.
Adding Benson to the squad likely signals the end for the emerging fan-favorite, Tom Kennedy.
The transaction to land Trinity Benson isn’t the Lions only move on Tuesday. Per multiple reports, they’ve also released Bruce Hector and Jahlani Tavai. The Lions still have more roster moves to make by Tuesday’s deadline.
