In a world where change is inevitable, the Detroit Lions are making sure they stay ahead of the game. In a candid interview with Chris Long, host of the “Green Light Podcast,” Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave us a glimpse into the team’s off-season moves, including the addition of rookie quarterback Hendon Hooker and the dynamic with veteran Jared Goff.

Potential of Hendon Hooker

The Lions’ off-season began with the intention to bring in some competition for the quarterback position. Campbell revealed that they didn’t know who they would bring in but, as fate would have it, Hendon Hooker, caught the attention of the coaching staff. Despite being injured, he was an enticingly skilled prospect at Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

Campbell didn’t mince words when describing Hooker’s appeal:

He’s very mature. He looks the part, he’s got a big arm, and he’s just got to learn how to play in the NFL.

Through strategic trades, the Lions managed to acquire Hooker in the NFL draft, making it clear that fortune favors the bold. Campbell’s excitement about Hooker’s potential and how he will fit into the team is palpable.

Goff’s guidance and veteran vision

Enter Jared Goff, the seasoned quarterback, expected to play a significant role in mentoring Hooker during his first year with the team. Campbell praised Goff for his positive attitude and his willingness to help Hooker learn and grow.

“Goff is going to handle it well. He knew Brad [Holmes, Lions General Manager] had called him, and he’s great. He’ll help this guy just learn and grow,” Campbell said.

With Goff as his guide, Hooker will have a “red shirt” year to recover from his injury. This will allow him extra time to learn a new offense and learn the ropes in the NFL.

Ben Johnson returns, Campbell praises entire staff

Head coach Dan Campbell also touched on the importance of retaining key coaching staff members, particularly Ben Johnson. Johnson, a rising star in the NFL coaching realm, had opportunities elsewhere but decided to stay with the Lions, believing in the team’s vision and direction.

Campbell’s excitement about Johnson’s decision to stay was unmistakable, “When he said that he was going to come back with us, I was ecstatic.”

Emphasizing the crucial role of having the right staff in place, Campbell said:

The most important thing that a head coach does is hire his staff. It’s about your staff and the people around you because without the right staff, you are nothing in my opinion.

Johnson’s decision to stay with the Lions speaks volumes about the strong foundation being built by the coaching staff. In a league where change is the only constant, the Detroit Lions are attempting to prove that adaptability and a strong foundation are the keys to success.
