The Washington Commanders made a significant move for their coaching staff, finalizing a deal with Eric Bieniemy, who is set to become the team’s new offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. The two sides agreed on a two-year deal, including a promotion in title, contractual structure, and a pay raise. Bieniemy’s hiring was confirmed by multiple sources to ESPN on Friday evening.

Bieniemy’s Accomplishments with the Chiefs

Bieniemy has spent the past five seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, where he helped guide the offense to two Super Bowl championships, including one last weekend. However, he was not the primary play-caller on coach Andy Reid’s staff. In Washington, Bieniemy will be in complete charge of the offense and call plays.

Replacing the Fired Scott Turner

Bieniemy will replace Scott Turner, who was fired on Jan. 10 after three seasons. Turner’s Washington team ranked 27th in yards per game and 28th in points per game during his three-year tenure. Last season, the Commanders ranked 20th in yards and 26th in points.

A Critical Year for the Commanders

The Washington Commanders have gone a combined 22-27-1 in head coach Ron Rivera’s first three seasons. However, they won the NFC East title with a 7-9 record in 2020. The team is now entering a crucial fourth season under Rivera, and a strong season is necessary for the franchise to continue with new ownership.

The Career of Eric Bieniemy

Bieniemy has interviewed for several head-coaching jobs in the past four offseasons, but he has not received any offers. This year, he interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts’ head-coaching position, which ultimately went to Shane Steichen. The Tennessee Titans also showed interest in Bieniemy for their offensive coordinator position, but they never interviewed him and instead promoted Tim Kelly to the role.

Former NFL player Eric Bieniemy spent ten seasons playing in the league with the San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Philadelphia Eagles. He then went on to spend five years as Minnesota’s running backs coach and one year as an assistant head coach with the Vikings. He was Colorado’s offensive coordinator from 2011 to ’12 before joining the Chiefs.

Impressive Recommendation from Mahomes

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said, “It’s so past deserved,” about Bieniemy’s new position with Washington. He added, “He’s done everything the right way. He’s been a part of this offense and this team for so long. Holds everybody accountable. Is creative in making up plays for us. I don’t know why he hasn’t been hired, but it’s been great for us.”

Upcoming News Conference

According to sources, Bieniemy will spend the weekend speaking with Washington’s current assistant coaches before a news conference introducing him to the team and fans next week. His arrival brings hope to Washington fans that the team will improve on the field with his leadership.
