BREAKING NEWS: DETROIT PISTONS HIRE MONTY WILLIAMS AS NEXT HEAD COACH
The Detroit Pistons and Monty Williams have agreed to a six year, $78.5 million deal making him the teams next head coach as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The contract could award Williams over $100 million with incentives and team options according to reports from James Edwards of the Athletic. That means team owner Tom Gores stepped up in a huge way financially to lock down the hottest name on the coaching market.
It remains to be seen what schemes and play designs Williams will employ, but the expectation is more wins.
With the team facing the most pivotal off-season in over a decade, getting the coach right was crucial.
This was the only coaching hire that mattered for the Detroit Pistons. Bucks assistant Charles Lee would’ve been a fine hire but they needed a home run. The restore hit a bump in the road with injuries to many key players including Cade Cunningham’s season ending surgery. Many fans began questioning the direction of the Pistons rebuild including it’s architect, Troy Weaver.
But Weaver’s track record suggested criticism for his rebuild should at least wait until we see his first coaching hire. Dwane Casey wasn’t a Weaver hire, but successfully worked with him after being brought in a year later.
The Williams hire is the pick me up needed after falling to the fifth pick via the NBA Draft Lottery.
