Tyler Bertuzzi’s Injury

Detroit Red Wings Tyler Bertuzzi will miss 4-6 weeks with what the team says is an upper body injury. Bertuzzi left mid 2nd period in Saturday night’s matchup with the Devils after a blocking shot. At first glance, it appeared to be a wrist/hand injury, which would be even more concerning for Tyler’s timeline to return to action. Thankfully that was not the case after Saturday’s win as Wings fans wish to see Bertuzzi back in the lineup sooner rather than later.

How will this affect the Red Wings?

Detroit has dealt with the injury bug in past seasons, but not quite this soon. Not only is it hard to replace a 30-goal scorer, but it’s even harder to replace chemistry that was built between his line mates.

Unlike in year’s past, this Detroit team does have mild depth at the forward position, along with unique storylines building within that depth. Jakub Vrana did not play on Monday against the Kings due to personal reasons. Forward Filip Zadina was scratched from Detroit’s first two games to start the season. Filip made his first appearance in the lineup alongside Andrew Copp and David Perron.

Steve Yzerman over the summer resigned Fillip Zadina to a 3- year contract worth with 1.825 million annually. Ultimately, a “prove” it contract that matches up perfectly with the Red Wings rebuild timeline. If there was ever a time for Zadina to prove his worth to Yzerman and Detroit’s staff, it is right now.

Red Wings’ have certainly benefited from their new additions through 3 games. However, Detroit will need to have the next man up mentality as the lineup continues to battle obstacles. They return to action on Friday night against the Blackhawks.
