Michigan football is already the two-time defending Big Ten Champions. Securing 2024 five-star quarterback Jadyn Davis, Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines are signaling their intent to dominate college football for years to come.
It’s not outside the realm of possibility that Jadyn Davis will be the succession plan for the Wolverines at the quarterback position once J.J. McCarthy goes to the NFL. In fact, its expected that Davis will be Michigan’s next signal caller.
Michigan: 5 Star Recruits
The 2021 and 2022 Michigan football teams are two of the most successful teams in Michigan football history. The 2023 team very well may be more talented, and they are set up to raise the bar even higher.
One of the reasons for the optimism is because Michigan is bringing back TWO former 5-star recruits: star quarterback J.J. McCarthy and cornerback Will Johnson. They are arguably the two most important Michigan players for the 2023 season and it shows the importance of recruiting (and especially receiving commitments from) 5-star recruits to come to Michigan. Before selecting the Wolverines, Jadyn Davis had narrowed down his college decision to Michigan, Ohio State, Clemson, North Carolina and Tennessee. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the high school phenom saw the recent recruiting success of Jim Harbaugh and gained confidence that he’d be joining a perennial National Championship contender.
What Jadyn Davis Means to Michigan
On a Big Ten level, Michigan winning two consecutive Big Ten championships is great. However, the past two seasons, Michigan has gotten beat in the first four of the college football playoffs. Particularly troubling was last season’s 51-45 loss to a TCU team that was the clear underdog against Michigan.

The Wolverines are never going to compete consistently with the likes of Georgia and Alabama unless they get more 5-star recruits to come to Michigan. As mentioned, the 2023 team has J.J. McCarthy and Will Johnson. However, that still might not be enough juice to put them over the top. In order to sustain success, Michigan has to continue to recruit at a high level and bring in more 5-star recruits. Jadyn Davis represents the idea that Michigan is becoming a National Powerhouse and can compete for National Championships.
UM Becoming QBU?
Before J.J. McCarthy, Michigan’s last great quarterback was Chad Henne. Henne was the starting QB at Michigan from 2004-2007 and retired earlier this year after winning a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. Between 2008-2020, Michigan struggled to find a great quarterback. It has been a revolving door that ranged from Denard Robinson to highly-recruited busts like Dylan McCaffrey and Brandon Peters. They looked to transfers like Shea Patterson and Jake Rudock and mediocre game managers like Cade McNamara. Let’s not forget about the disastrous John O’Korn era.
Needless to say, it was often a struggle for Michigan to feel confident in their quarterback performing on the biggest stage.
However, that appears to have changed with McCarthy. J.J. put up one of the most impressive seasons by a Michigan quarterback ever, and he is primed for an even better season in 2023. The star is also on track to break the Michigan quarterback first round draft pick drought, which has lasted since Jim Harbaugh (of all people) was taken in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft. With the commitment of 5-star Jadyn Davis, it feels like maybe the tide is turning in Ann Arbor. If Jadyn Davis pans out, we could be discussing Michigan as college football’s new “QBU.”
Final Thoughts
Michigan football fans should be thrilled with the news of Jadyn Davis committing to the Wolverines. The present is already bright, and the future looks to be shining even brighter in Ann Arbor.
