The Detroit Lions are considering a change in venue for their team headquarters. The team’s current headquarters in Allen Park, a suburb southwest of Detroit, has been their current home for over 20 years.

Turnout to Lions training camps is not exceptionally high. Some of that can be credited to the team’s struggles throughout much of the 21st century. However, the Allen Park location is not the easiest to get to either.

Reporters asked team president Rod Wood at the annual league meeting if the franchise is considering relocating its training camp. Wood said they are considering moving the entire headquarters.

“We’re considering whether we’re going to continue to stay there and put more money into the facility, or be better off looking at locations elsewhere in Metro Detroit,” Wood said on Tuesday. “In the short run, we’re going to stay where we are, do the best we can to get as many fans in there and have the experience as good as it can be.”

Whether the team invests in a new facility elsewhere or upgrades their current one, this is an opportunity for the Lions to answer for the weaker points in their NFLPA report card.

Detroit received a D-, 28th in the league, in food and nutrition. Players felt there was enough variety or options in their meals. Only 59% of players said the cafeteria provided enough room for everyone. The team’s training room received a D+ grade, tied for 24th in the NFL.

A new facility would provide the Lions with a clean slate and an opportunity to upgrade all aspects of their headquarters.

Wood has not decided on relocating the Detroit Lions’ headquarters yet

“I kind of had it as one of my goals this year, was to kind of decide are we staying or are we going to relocate,” Wood said. “I’m not going to hit that goal because I’ve not made that decision yet or recommendation.”

The Lions hold playoff aspirations for the 2023 season. The team has an eye on building a championship team in the near future. A new facility could be inevitable. Success breeds demand, and the Lions expect to sell out home games and fill the seats at training camp. The latter may still be more difficult to attain due to their current facility’s accommodations.

Plans for a new Lions’ facility may not materialize this season, but signs are starting to point toward a new headquarters somewhere on the horizon.
