John Morton, Former Lions Coach, Joins Denver Broncos as Pass Game Coordinator

The Detroit Lions have lost yet another assistant coach, as John Morton has accepted a position as the passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos. Morton was previously the Lions’ senior offensive assistant, helping to build the team’s offense into one of the best in the NFL.

Morton’s Background and Contributions to the Lions

Morton has an impressive coaching resume, including stints as the offensive assistant, pass game coordinator, and wide receivers coach for the New Orleans Saints under Sean Payton. He was instrumental in helping first-time offensive coordinator Ben Johnson build the Lions’ offense quickly into one of the best units in the NFL during his one season with the team.

While it’s not uncommon for senior assistants to leave after a year or two, Morton’s departure is another loss for Detroit this offseason. The team has already seen several assistant coaches leave, including Duce Staley and Todd Wash, who were both hired by the Carolina Panthers for the same roles they held in Detroit.

Morton’s Role with the Broncos

In Denver, Morton will join former Lions coach Joe Lombardi, who is the Broncos’ offensive coordinator. This pairing could be a recipe for success, as both coaches have a proven track record of building high-performing offenses.

The Lions’ Loss is the Broncos’ Gain

Morton’s departure is a significant loss for Detroit, who have been working hard to rebuild their coaching staff under head coach Dan Campbell. However, it’s not surprising that Payton, who is a mentor to Campbell, would poach someone from the Lions’ squad. With Morton’s experience and knowledge of Payton’s offensive scheme, he could be a valuable asset to the Broncos’ coaching staff.

Other Changes to the Lions’ Coaching Staff

In addition to losing several assistant coaches, the Lions have also added new coaches to their staff. Steve Heiden is the team’s new tight ends coach, Scottie Montgomery replaces Staley, and Dre Bly is the team’s new cornerbacks coach. While these changes are significant, the loss of Morton is sure to be felt by the Lions and their fans.
