Sean Payton TRADED to Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos have made a big move, trading for Saints head coach Sean Payton. Payton becomes the 19th head coach in franchise history. He comes to the Broncos after 15 seasons as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, where he led the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2010. The Broncos have made a trade with the Saints to acquire Payton, giving up their 2023 first-round pick and 2024 second-round pick for the coach and a 2024 third-round selection from the Saints.

Payton, who was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2006, will be faced with the task of fixing the league’s lowest-scoring offense from 2022. He has a record of 152-89 as head coach of the Saints, and this move reunites him with a team he has faced several times in his career.
“This was the opportunity I was looking for,” Payton said. “It’s a great fanbase and great tradition. The ownership group is fantastic, and I love the way they competed in some of their games last year. It’s a good football city.”
The Broncos have been in need of a change, missing the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons and having fired three head coaches since January 2019. Payton will take over for Nathaniel Hackett, who was fired in December following a 51-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Trading for Head Coaches: A History
This is not the first time an NFL team has traded for a head coach. Other notable examples include Bill Parcells, Mike Holmgren, Bill Belichick, Jon Gruden, and Herm Edwards. Payton signed an extension with the Saints in 2019 that was set to run through the 2024 season. The two teams had to negotiate compensation for the Broncos to acquire Payton as their head coach.
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis commented. “I’ve never counted on getting anything for Sean because he might decide to do the media deal for five years, who knows? So, we weren’t spending draft capital going forward hoping we might get something if he decides to coach again.”
Moreover, Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner explained why Payton was the right choice for the job. “Obviously, the head coaching experience, the Super Bowl win, the ability to lead a team. To put together a great staff. Those are all things that we think will help us get to where we want to go.”
DeMeco Ryans Signs 6-Year Deal to Lead Houston Texans
The Houston Texans have made history by naming DeMeco Ryans, former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, as their new head coach. Furthermore, Ryans will be the first team in NFL history to have three consecutive Black coaches. Ryans was a standout linebacker for the Texans. He signs a six-year deal with the team and will be officially introduced as the franchise’s coach on Thursday.
Texans owner Cal McNair praised Ryans, stating that he was the right coach for the team. “He has a proven track record for developing high-quality players and constantly innovated his defensive scheme. We started this process with the goal of finding someone our fans and city can be proud of. and we’ve done just that.”
General Manager Nick Caserio also expressed his excitement about working with Ryans and building the team. “DeMeco is a proven coach with a track record of success who has an innate ability to lead people. We are working to build a sustainable program that has long-term success and DeMeco is the coach we feel is the best fit to help.”
