Police arrested and charged Alabama basketball player Darius Miles with capital murder after a shooting on Sunday in Tuscaloosa. Miles, 21, is one of two suspects in the case. He, along with 20-year-old Michael Lynn Davis of Maryland, shot and killed a young woman after a verbal altercation early Sunday morning.

According to AL.com, the victim in the shooting was 23-year-old Jamea Jonae Harris, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Additionally, Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Capt. Jack Kennedy said in a news conference that the shooting appeared to be the result of a minor argument between the victims and suspects after they encountered each other along the strip. He added that video surveillance and witness statements led to the arrest of Miles, the Alabama basketball player and Davis.

In response to the arrest, the University of Alabama released a statement saying that Miles’ profile on the school’s basketball website had been taken down and that he is no longer part of the team. The statement also expressed condolences for the victims and gratitude for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency teams.

Miles, who signed with Alabama in 2020 as a four-star prospect, had been battling an ankle injury and has appeared in only six games this season. Over the last three seasons, he appeared in 53 games averaging 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.

We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Jamea Jonae Harris. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.
