There is speculation that Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young may request a trade.
It got me thinking…should the Pistons try to acquire the young star?
Young, a 24 year old sharpshooter, is under contract through the 2026-27 season with an opt-out option after 2025-26. He led the Atlanta Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals two years ago, but the team struggled last season down the stretch. The Miami Heat eliminated the Hawks in the first round. This season, the Hawks had lofty expectations but have a mediocre 16-16 record. They are ninth in the Eastern Conference and in danger of missing the playoffs
The acquisition of guard Dejounte Murray was expected to improve the team’s performance, but the on-court chemistry between Trae Young and Murray has not yet been fully realized.
Recently, Landry Fields took over as the Hawks’ General Manager and has been given the authority to make any necessary roster changes to improve the team. Fields appears to have a strong relationship with Trae, but we will have to wait and see if he can execute.
Moving on from DeAndre Hunter and Clint Capela is a possibility, but it would certainly signify that the Hawks are looking to next year. John Collins has been mentioned in trade talks, but they often fall by the wayside. There is uncertainty about Young’s willingness to continue playing for a team that has struggled to find success.
The Detroit Pistons may not be able to offer immediate success. They do, however, have the resources to make a strong offer for Young without compromising their future.
The Pistons have the financial flexibility and draft capital to make a deal. Acquiring Young would certainly require the Pistons to part with Killian Hayes, Saddiq Bey and Isiah Stewart.
You would be left with a starting lineup of Young, Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Bojan Bogdanovic, and Jalen Duren. The thought is captivating. Can you imagine the floor spacing that lineup could create on offense?!
Is this a move that Pistons GM Troy Weaver should consider? Or is it too early in the team’s restoration?
