Bobby Lashley is in the best stretch of his WWE career right now. Just look at his past 12 months. As they say, the proof is in the pudding. He’s held both the United States and WWE Heavyweight titles. He headlined night one of Wrestlemania 37, defeating Drew McIntyre to retain the WWE Heavyweight Championship. And to cap it off, his WWE title reign was one of the three longest reigns in the past seven years (6 months).
And if you want to add some sprinkles to the sundae, his performance in the Fatal Five-Way at Day One was impressive. He literally washed the competition. Also, he did something that few wrestlers have done in WWE history. Bobby Lashley made Brock Lesnar look weak and inferior. When he speared Lesnar through the barricade, I jumped out of my seat. It was truly a “Holy S***!” moment. Then, when he placed Lesnar in The Hurt Lock, if further cemented him as a bad a** Lesnar wanted no parts off.
“The Almighty” is putting in work. Despite that, WWE is dropping the ball with him and his upcoming match at Royal Rumble with Brock Lesnar.
Yes, during the latest version of Raw, WWE displayed an excellent video package to hype up the Lashley-Brock Lesnar encounter. It was one of their best reels in years. I saw a person on Twitter say it showcased WWE can really deliver when they want to. However, that tweet went on to say that the frustrating thing about WWE is their inconsistency on choosing when to deliver.
That describes their positioning of Lashley right now. During his six-month WWE title reign, they showcased him as one of the most dominant champions of his era. Since losing the title to Big E, it’s been hit or miss with him. WWE positioned as a tough challenger to Lesnar right now. However, he isn’t being showcased as the true threat that he could be. Besides Roman Reigns, Lashley is the only available (and believable) person to knock Lesnar off his square.
Instead, WWE is positioning Lashley as if he’s lucky to be in the ring with Lesnar. Proof of that was their exchange on last Monday’s episode of Raw. Both Lashley and Lesnar at 6’3 and 260+ pounds. Both also have impressive physiques. And lastly, both look like they could kill with their bare hands. Yet, in that exchange, they tried to make one look like a weak punk, which was Lashley.
In the words of Randy Orton to Kofi Kingston, “Stupid, Stupid Stupid.”
This upcoming match between the two is the true heavyweight bout that the WWE has been missing for years. It has a prize fight feel, one which is worthy of Wrestlemania billing. As of now, the Royal Rumble is 11 days away. WWE needs to make up their mind on how they’re going to use Bobby Lashley moving forward. Their company is losing stars left and right to AEW. And Brock Lesnar, who is working limited dates, won’t be around for long. Now is the time to pull the trigger on making “The Almighty” the face of their failing show, RAW, and maximize the potential of his run.
Because at the rate they’re going now, these DQ finishes and being made to look inferior to the likes of Goldberg, Lesnar, and others, isn’t it.
