There are three constants in life: death, taxes, and Luka Doncic is doing something crazy on a basketball court. At just the age of 23, Doncic has cemented himself as one of the best players in the world. And over the past week, Luka has been on a historic run. In his past four games, Luka Doncic is averaging 46.3 points 12.8 rebounds and 10 assists. The Mavericks are on a 7 game win streak, all because of the all-time play of their star. The only problem with this run is that the guard is averaging 40 minutes a game in December/January. And if Dallas wants to compete with Luka for years to come, they can’t push him like this forever.
The Dallas Mavericks find themselves in a situation akin to the Green Bay Packers. Like Green Bay, Dallas had their old star in Dirk Nowitzki. And Dirk had what is regarded as one of the 75 best careers ever by the NBA 75 list. Every franchise record that isn’t held by Luka Doncic is more than likely held by Dirk. He’s the only player that the franchise has given a statue, which is more than deserved. However, in his long illustrious career with the Mavericks, Dirk only walked away with one championship in his career.
Luka Doncic is not on contract forever
Luka Doncic has began his rookie supermax contract. However, after the end of this contract, Doncic has full say over his next destination. And if the Mavericks were to keep this roster, Luka would have no reason to stay. With a supporting cast featuring Spencer Dinwiddie, Christian Wood, Davis Bertans, and Dwight Powell, Dallas isn’t exactly contending. That is, of course, unless Luka goes nuclear and takes him there himself. And he might be able to do that at this stage of his career, but even LeBron can’t keep up that pace. If he is going to be the future star of this league for years to come, he can’t do that pace.
The Mavericks have tried to find Doncic a co-star, but their efforts have been futile. Kristaps Porzingis was always a great idea on paper, but never could stay healthy to reach his potential. And in order to get out of his contract and to get out of Luka’s way, they took on bad contracts and minimal assets. One or two bad contracts is not the end of the world, in fact, normal in the NBA. But when a third of your roster is bad contracts, and you don’t have the room to give your star a good team? That’s when you have a serious issue. Ever since the 2000’s, the Mavericks have been a standard for winning in the regular season. But stars don’t stay for regular season success. They expect that.
