Super Bowl Sports Cards.
The upcoming Super Bowl LVII on Sunday is not only a showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, it is also a battle between two of the NFL’s most collectible players: Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. As one of Mahomes’ rarest football cards hits the market, Hurts’ cards continue to skyrocket in price. But who will come out on top in the world of collectible cards?
Mahomes’ Rare Contender
One of Patrick Mahomes’ rarest football cards, the 2017 Panini Contenders Cracked Ice Patrick Mahomes II Rookie Auto card, is up for bid at PWCC Marketplace. Numbered to only 25 and graded a PSA 10, this card is one of two to earn a PSA Gem Mint 10 grade. Adorned with shimmering silver and gold foil, the Cracked Ice parallel is a rare sight to behold.

Mahomes, who has led the Chiefs to three of the past four Super Bowls, is seeking his second victory in the big game. Despite his impressive track record, Jeremy Lee of PWCC doesn’t think Mahomes’ prices will soar much even if he wins. “People are only kind of pricing in the fact that he could become one of the greatest of all time,” Lee said. “It’s Jalen Hurts you have to pay attention to.”
Hurts’ Rise to Fame
Jalen Hurts, the young gun and face of the Philadelphia Eagles, may not have the same history or hype as Mahomes, but his cards are much more accessible. The Spanish Association of Sports Cards and Collectibles (ASOCARDS) has observed an exponential rise in the price of Hurts’ cards this season after the Eagles’ successful run.
A reference card, such as the Prizm Silver graded by PSA from the Panini 2020 collection of Hurts’ rookie season, reached its lowest price just after Super Bowl 56. At that time, it sold for $262, but now it’s worth $1,050, which means it has quadrupled in price in just one year.
Mahomes vs. Hurts
While Hurts’ value has skyrocketed, Patrick Mahomes’ equivalent card of his rookie season moves in a different price range. It reached an all-time high of $14,900 just before Super Bowl 55. In comparison, the most expensive Jalen Hurts card sold on record was for $38,100 in August 2022.

However, when it comes to the most expensive card sold so far, Mahomes holds the all-time NFL record with a 2017 National Treasures Platinum #161 card that sold for over 4.3 million dollars in July 2021. It is the only card of its kind in the entire world.
In the rapidly fluctuating world of collectible cards, where the value is based on player performance, it’s possible that Hurts’ maximum figure will be exceeded by the time the Super Bowl arrives. However, it is not expected to be anywhere near the price of Mahomes’ most expensive card.
The Final Verdict
As the popularity of trading cards continues to rise, the interest in Mahomes and Hurts is at an all-time high. Only time will tell if either of them will take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy and secure their place in the trading card world. The value of their cards is based on player performance and can fluctuate rapidly. It is yet to be seen which player will come out on top in the world of collectible cards, but both players have a unique impact on the market and are attracting high levels of interest from collectors. The battle for trading card dominance will be one to watch as the Super Bowl draws near.
