As the Detroit Lions prepare for their Week 13 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, it appears they’ll be without running back D’Andre Swift.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Swift could miss multiple weeks with a sprained shoulder. Fowler went on to state that Swift desires to return quickly. However, due to him hurting his AC joint, the Lions are cautious.
The news surrounding Swift surfaced after Dan Campbell spoke to the media on Wednesday. Before that happened, Campbell still didn’t sound too confident Swift would join the team this week. Instead, he discussed their depth at running back.
“When you lose a guy that’s pretty productive for you, someone’s gotta pick up the slack,” said Campbell regarding Swift’s then-potential absence. “The good news is we got Jamaal [Williams] back. We got him back. This will be his third week to get back and get in the flow here a little bit.”
“So certainly we’re going to lean on Jamaal quite a bit, but look, we’re gonna use Godwin [Igwebuike], we’re gonna use [Jermar] Jefferson. That’s part of the plan. They’re all gonna be able to play. It’s a little bit by committee, but I think you’re gonna see a lot of Jamaal Williams.”
The Lions have yet to confirm ESPN’s reporting. It’s worth noting, however, that D’Andre Swift was not visible at the Lions practice facility. Williams, Jefferson, Igwebuike, and Craig Reynolds were the running back participating in drills on Wednesday.
Before the injury, Swift was on pace to eclipse 1,000 all-purpose yards this Sunday. Currently, he sits at 555 rushing yards and four touchdowns. And on the receiving side, he has 56 receptions for 429 yards and two touchdowns.
With six games left in the season, it’s admirable that D’Andre Swift would like to re-join the lineup before the season’s end. Nonetheless, with the team sitting at 0-10-1, placing Swift on injured reserve would be best for the team’s future.
