The Detroit Pistons held a press conference today to introduce the newest Pistons that were taken in last night’s draft.
The Pistons welcomed the four new additional players that will be joining the young and developing core. Below are the four players the Pistons drafted last night.
- 1st overall: Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State)
- 42nd overall: Isaiah Livers (Michigan)
- 52nd overall: Luka Garza (Gonzaga)
- 57th overall: Balsa Koprivica ( Florida State)
The press conference had numerous highlights throughout the press conference.
The first highlight was GM Troy Weaver talking about the impact that all of the draft picks would make for the team. Weaver stated on the effect the newest Pistons will make on the team, “You can debate the player, but you’re not going to debate the person…we had to have the right people.”
The main drawing to the press conference was the number one pick Cade Cunningham.
Owner Tom Gores first made remarks on the impact that Cunningham is going to have on the Pistons. Gores stated, “The man has it. He’s a great leader and connector. We went through a lot with Cade, and we just had to test him. Along the way, we thought Cade was the best player and franchise-changing.”
GM Troy Weaver made a statement on Cunningham. “We got the right guy in the draft for the organization…you know instantly, but you have to run a process.”
Cunningham made a statement on his excitement to be in Detroit!
“I’m more than thrilled to be here, to see some faces around Detroit and soak at the moment. I’ve worked hard to get to this point. When I heard Detroit winning the lottery, my mind went to Detroit. I wanted to be here.”
Both second-round picks, Livers and Garza made statements at the press conference as well.
Livers stated on being able to stay in Michigan and play for the Pistons, “I’m just excited to be back home. When I knew the Pistons were on the clock at 42, my dad, my mom and I were like ‘let’s stay home.”
Garza stated, “I’m thankful and grateful for the organization to give me an opportunity.”
Second round picks: Livers will wear #12, Garza will wear #55, and Koprivicia will wear #23.Â
But Cunningham will be wearing a unique number. Cunningham will wear the #2 jersey for the Pistons. The Pistons retired jersey number 2 in honor of the legendary coach Chuck Daly who led the Bad Boys to two championships.
The Daly family permitted Cunningham to wear the number two jersey. At the press conference, Cunningham thank the Daily family for allowing him to wear the number two.Â
Cunningham stated on how honored he is on wearing the number two, “I know how much these numbers mean (in the rafters) and I know that the people that came before me, really built something special in Detroit, and those legacies live on forever.”
The Detroit Pistons next event on the off-season calendar is free agency. The NBA free agency will be August 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
