The University of Michigan has placed co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss on paid leave while university police investigate alleged “computer access crimes” at Schembechler Hall.
Specific details into the alleged crime have not been made available. Some of the most common cyber-crimes include identity theft, phishing and hacking. However, additional computer related crimes stretch as far as electronic money laundering, social media fraud and grooming (making sexual advances to minors). Schembechler Hall, in Ann Arbor, is where all things Michigan Football go down. This includes the practice facilities, training rooms and the offices of coach Jim Harbaugh and staff.
A statement from the University of Michigan’s deputy chief of police, Crystal James, reads: “The University of Michigan Police Department (UMPD) is investigating a report of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall during December 21-23, 2022. Since this is an ongoing investigation, there is no additional information to share.”
An item from Jan. 5, 2023, is the only known incident involving U-M police at Schembechler Hall, 1200 S. State Street, where…
“an employee reported fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university email accounts without authorization. It was found that a crime may have been committed.”

Dispatchers, call-takers, and 911 operators use Computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems to prioritize and record incident calls, identify responder status and location, and effectively dispatch personnel.
Again, the focus of the investigation is currently unclear, but this is yet another questionable run in with the law coming out of Ann Arbor. Defensive lineman Mazi Smith was recently the focus of a gun-related charge, and the team is currently under NCAA investigation for alleged recruiting violations. While not criminally related, Jim Harbaugh’s flirtation with the NFL has brought on a cloud of question marks since the season wrapped up.
Weiss came to Ann Arbor after spending 12 seasons (2009-20) on the Baltimore Ravens staff for head coach John Harbaugh. Weiss was a graduate assistant at Stanford (2005-08) where he had previously worked for Jim Harbaugh there.
Matt Weiss is in his 2nd season at Michigan. He has been the Co-offensive coordinator with Sherrone Moore. He remained the QB coach and oversaw the development of JJ McCarthy into one of the college football’s breakout stars.
Weiss is not currently on the road recruiting or communicating with recruits in any way. The university has yet to comment on when or if Weiss will return to his coaching duties.
