Just say no.
That should be the message the Detroit Lions send HBO, which wants to run back a Lions Hard Knocks documentary this summer.
We all know sequels are not as good. This sequel could put the Lions in a dangerous spot again. Last season made sense. The Lions had never been on the show. Expectations were low. There was nothing to lose.
The Lions entertained America with whimsical and witty sound bites from head coach Dan Campbell, dramatic readings from running back coach Deuce Staley. We all watched and smiled, and it made fans bullish on the Lions future.
But how did that work out for the Lions? The team began the season 1-6. Although the Lions rallied to finish 9-8 and come within a whisker of making the playoffs, the high expectations and slow start doomed them.
The Detroit News reported that the producers from Hard Knocks asked the Lions if they could run it back again.
Hard Knocks is a fun watch, but it is a distraction. The Lions need every bit of focus and fervor to match high expectations of winning the NFC North and making a playoff run.
Hard Knocks might be fun for the rest of us, but it is a toxic blend for the Lions.
Just say no.
