The Julio Jones drama has been off to a hot start in recent days. Shannon Sharpe called up Jones while on the show Undisputed, Jones went on to say “I’m outta there” referring to the Atlanta Falcons. With the recent news coming straight from the source, social media has been in a frenzy.
NFL Twitter and media experts have been coming up with elaborate trade partners and ideal destinations for the pro-bowl wideout. Many different betting websites have been drawing up predictions already. Some of the notable teams rumored to want Jones are New England, San Francisco and Las Vegas. The one team high on bettors list I left out is our own Detroit Lions.
Lions Fans Hysteria
As most Lions fans do, any news that they are involved with they jump on. Hearing Julio Jones could be a potential landing spot here in Detroit attracts a lot of attention, unnecessary attention. The Lions are currently going through a rebuild, not a bottom tier playoff team.
You can call this team whatever you want but they are not close to anything significant and that includes the playoffs. I can sugar coat this idea of Julio Jones coming to the Lions but that would be wrong on my part. Is Julio Jones a freak athlete with Hall of Fame stats to back him up? Well obviously yes, I would be foolish to knock on his accomplishments.
I am trying to get across to Lions fans is that we do not need an aging wideout (32 years old) that is expected to be paid over 23 million dollars this upcoming season. Acquiring Julio Jones would simply be illogical and destroy what the new regime is trying to accomplish. Jones contract also would not work out and we would have to restructure it as his current contract would put the Lions over the salary cap.
Julio Jones has also expressed that he wants to win. If the Lions somehow were to trade for Jones, he would have to learn how to participate in a rebuild type of organization. Hearing that he wants to play for a winning team, I believe that he will draw back his effort if he was on this roster
Ideal spots for Julio Jones
Some ideal places for Jones in my opinion is New England, Tennessee, and Green Bay. Julio in the Patriots offense could help develop Mac Jones and help them win games especially with that top 10 defense. If he goes to the Titans I think he would flourish in that play action offense that occasionally goes to the deep ball. Pair Julio with AJ Brown, that could be a lethal 1, 2 punch. If the Packers were smart they would go and get Julio to make Aaron Rodgers happy and help retain him.
I am all for bringing in big talent to improve this below par roster, Julio Jones is just not it.
