Detroit, MI – The Frank Ragnow era in the motor city has abruptly come to an end as he unexpectedly announced his sudden retirement from professional football at the age of 29 on June 2, 2025, closing the chapter on a remarkable seven year career defined by resilience and sacrifice. In an emotional Instagram post, Ragnow cited lingering health concerns and a desire to prioritize his family as driving factors behind the decision.

Playing Career

Frank Ragnow entered the NFL as the 20th pick in the 2018 draft out of the University of Arkansas where he had been a standout two time All-American offensive lineman for the Razorbacks. Upon arriving in Detroit, Ragnow was immediately put to work as a starter, tasked with helping the previously 9-7 Lions retool after narrowly missing the playoffs.

Over his seven-year career, Ragnow quickly became one of the league’s premier centers, being selected to four Pro Bowls and named a second team All-Pro three times.

Throughout his career, Ragnow adopted the gritty moniker that Detroit had earned itself as he played through multiple injuries in 2022, only missing one game in the process in what became another pro bowl caliber year.

Even while dealing with injuries, Ragnow’s consistency was impressive, missing only four games in his final three seasons despite dealing with a lingering toe injury, calf injury and a partially torn pectoral muscle.

Frank Ragnow off the field

However, Ragnow’s impact extended well beyond the football field. Off the field, he was known for his humility and commitment to mental health advocacy. After suddenly losing his father to a heart attack during college, Ragnow spoke openly about his grief and healing process. He later launched the “Rags Remembered Foundation” to support young people dealing with loss, using his own experiences to uplift others.

In 2023, he was named the NFLPA Community MVP for his work in the Detroit community, further solidifying his legacy as a player who never sought the spotlight, but consistently used it for good when it found him.

While offensive linemen often do not get the superstar praise they deserve in the eyes of the fans and media, Ragnow’s character speaks for itself as he exemplifies what it means to be a leader, both on and off the field. He served as the backbone for the Lions offensive line through the good and the bad, and he will be sorely missed as the squad from Detroit looks to fill the void that his retirement brings both on the field and in the community.
