As of 4pm ET yesterday, all NFL teams had to drop their roster size from 80 to the regular-season limit of 53 players. This left several hundreds of players across the NFL team-less, but still up for grabs in free agent signings, waiver claims and practice squad.
The Detroit Lions used this to their advantaged and signed quarterback Nate Sudfeld this morning as a back up to Jared Goff after waiving David Blough. They also acquired DT Benito Jones from the Miami Dolphins through waiver claims.
Younger players who were part of the final round of roster cuts yesterday are available to have a waiver claim placed on them up until noon today.
Once that deadline is up, all unclaimed players become free agents and teams are able to begin signing them to the practice squad.
The NFL allows practice squads to contain up to 16 players. Here is the initial 2022 Detroit Lions Practice Squad:
TE Garret Griffin
CB Saivion Smith
WR Tom Kennedy
CB AJ Parker
RB Justin Jackson
LB James Houston
WR Maurice Alexander
T Obinna Eze
DL Bruce Hector
LB Anthony Pittman
T Dan Skipper
LB Jarrad Davis
TE Derrick Deese
