The Detroit Pistons G-League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise, have made two major announces in the past 24 hours.
Open Tryouts
The first announcement from the Cruise is that the team will be having open tryouts to the public. Staff from both the Pistons and Cruise will be in attendance to watch and evaluate the participating players. All players trying out need to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and there is only a limit of 105 participants. The registration deadline is on September 10th at 5:00 p.m. EST. Tryouts will take place at the Pistons Performance Center in downtown Detroit on September 15th at 6:00 p.m EST.
Head Coach of the Cruise announced
Today, the Motor City Cruise announced their first head coach in franchise history. The franchise named Dj Bakker the new head coach. Bakker has coached under Dwane Casey for the past five seasons. He was a player development coach with the Raptors in the first two seasons and helped develop Pascal Siakam, Norm Powell, and Fred VanVleet. He worked as a Player Development coach these past three seasons and worked closely with Luke Kennard and Saddiq Bey.
Cruise President and General Manager Rob Murphy came out with a statement on Bakker earning the head coaching job.
“DJ brings tremendous basketball knowledge and has had great success working with players at all levels. “He’s a great communicator, teacher and possesses the tools necessary to accelerate the growth of our players and team. DJ has been preparing his entire life for this opportunity. I know he will represent the Cruise and our entire organization the right way.”
Bakker came out with a statement as well.
“It’s an honor to be chosen as the first head coach of the Motor City Cruise. I know how much the Cruise means to this organization and the city of Detroit. This is a great opportunity I take pride in and will bring a high level of energy, enthusiasm, and work ethic daily to ensure this is a successful experience for our players and organization — Detroit is home.”
The 2021-2022 season will be the inaugural season for the Motor City Cruise. The team will be playing at the new Wayne State Basketball Arena as well.
