Tonight is the most anticipated matchup in all of Summer League between Jalen Green and Cade Cunningham.
Cade Cunningham was drafted first overall by the Pistons in the 2021 NBA Draft. While, The Rockets drafted Jalen Green with the second overall pick.
Everyone in the NBA community has been waiting for the top two draft picks to battle it out. So, let’s break down the matchup between Cunningham and Green.
Green and Cunningham First Summer League Game Recap
Jalen Green and Cade Cunningham played on their first game of Summer League on Sunday.
Green had a monster performance on Sunday against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He finished the game with 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Cunningham had an averaged game for him against the Thunder. He finished the game with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
Cunningham vs Green Play-Styles
Cade Cunningham and Jalen Green both have completely different playing styles.
Green is more of an athletic and explosive player. From his quick speed down the floor to his high-flying dunks. He is the most athletic player coming out of the 2021 NBA Draft Class. His best skill is scoring down in the paint. In the G-League, he shot 69.1% from 5 ft to the basket. The best player comparison to him is Zach Lavine. Lavine is known for his quick speed and athleticism on the floor, just like Green.
Cunningham is more of a skill base and team player. Cunningham can do it all on both sides of the floor But his primary skill is shooting. At Oklahoma State, he averaged 20.1 points and shot 40% from the 3-point line. He is one of the most dangerous players on the offensive side of the ball. He has been compared to Mavericks guard Luka Doncic. Just like Doncic, Cunningham is an elite clutch scorer. He ranked first in clutch points in the nation, and Big-12 with 103 clutch points scored.
What is going to happen tonight?
The matchup between Green and Cunningham has been anticipated for a long time. The two have never played against each other beyond high school. Due to Green not playing in college last season. So, it’s going to be exciting to see two go at it.
In my opinion, Cunningham is going to take over the game. His last game against the Thunder was not his best performance. So tonight, Cunningham is going to play with a chip on his shoulder. And is going to prove to the whole NBA community why he was the chosen as the number one pick.
I think the Pistons will win the game in a close battle against the Rockets. I see this game being very high scoring between the two teams. Also, I predict both player each dropping 20 plus points. The matchup between Cunningham and Green is just the start of a new rivalry in the NBA.
The Houston Rockets vs. Detroit Pistons matchup will tip-off at 9 p.m.
