The Detroit Lions signing Desmond Trufant was a mistake from the beginning. And after a season of barely playing and underwhelming health, his time in the Motor City might be nearing its end.

With the NFL offseason is officially underway, Pro Football Focus released a report predicting roster cut candidates for all 32 NFL teams. When it came to the Lions, they suggested that Trufant will become the Lions’ cap casualty.

Trufant, 30, signed a two-year deal, a $21 million contract with the Lions on March 25th last year. The Lions expected Trufant to be a replacement for Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, whom the Lions traded five days prior. Slay had a troubled relationship with then-Lions head coach Matt Patricia. This reasoning is why the Lions traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles for third and fifth-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately for the Lions (and Trufant), the trade has not worked out for either party.

Due to a series of hamstring injuries, Trufant could only play in six games last season for the Lions. In those six games, he registered 16 tackles, a sack, and an interception. Before coming to the Lions, Trufant only played nine games the previous season with the Atlanta Falcons. Now there’s an argument Lions had to trade Slay due to because of the situation mentioned above. Despite that, adding Trufant with his inconsistent health alongside rookie cornerback Jeff Okudah was a disaster in the making. The Lions placed Trufant on injured reserve on December 2nd last year.

It’s a sad thing when anyone loses their job. Nevertheless, Lions’ fans in the Motor City won’t lose any sleep on Desmond Trufant possibly departing.
